Recent Thoughts

June 2, 2009

While attempting to move some stuff recently I found a ton of old football cards. While looking through these cards and analyzing the statistics listed on the back of these cards I came to several conclusions.

First off, players are becoming more well-known than in the 1980s and 90s. Many players with respectable statisitics are now never mentioned by anyone. What ever happened to the Lamar Smiths or Webster Slaughters of the world?  When technological upgrades like fantasy football and NFL Network came into play, professional athletes became even more mainstream. In past generations it was the top-notch stars that were known nationally. Now backup players are becoming recognizable. In past decades those type of players were only known by the fans of the team they played for. It is quite fun to recall lesser-known players from past years with a fan of the team you also like. Do fans of other teams have any idea who you are talking about? In many cases, unless that fan is really obsessed with the sport, probably not.

Also card companies have become way too obsessed with rookies. These guys receive all the attention because of the potential involved. It all started when a big-name player’s one or two rookies cards that were made became highy sought after. Big name draft picks today have over one hundred rookies in some cases. It is simply a flooded market. In looking at old cards from the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, it seems clear that having double digit amounts of rookie cards of players who become major dissappointments seems excessive.  I think several Pro-Bowl offensive linemen probably don’t even have barely any cards at all made of them.

Final thoughts on the NFL Draft

April 30, 2009

The draft has come and gone but not forgotten. The event is my favorite time of the year and really enjoyed watching every minute of it.

First off, I could not believe several players were not drafted.  Note that I do not know if discipline problems were involved in grading these players.

1. Graham Harrell, QB Texas Tech- This guy obviously put up amazing numbers in a pass-happy system. I thought he would get picked late but he did not. He seems to be a solid individual with leadership skills so his arm strength must really be in question. I thought since last year Colt Brennan got drafted that  he spread offense quarterbacks were starting to get some love by NFL teams.

2. Terrill Byrd, DT Cincinnati- He really jumped out on film to me and was a pre-season All-American in many people’s eyes. He is a little underweight and not overly tall but I thought someone would give him a shot also in the mid to late rounds. He would have to play in the 4-3 scheme but still I thought his film was impressive.

3. Aaron Kelly, WR Clemson- The tall receiver is also built to a degree and I tought his grade would depend on the 40 yard dash time. He then ran in the 4.5 range which is not bad for a guy his size.  I thought he uses his body well and made quite a few catches in college, which is impressive because the team struggled this year on offense. He was not drafted however.

Two teams seemed to me to have the best drafts in terms of overall quality players acquired.

The Jacksonville Jaguars not only drafted top talents but also filled needs. Eugene Monroe fell to them and is a top five player. He will start immediately and seems to fit the system well because he comes from a pro-style in college. Eben Britton was a first-round talent that fell to them in the second round. He now has something to prove and will be working hard. Both players help upgrade a position that was key to the team failing to win last year. Obviously the injuries and tragedy involving Richard Collier getting shot hurt the team badly.

The Jaguars then drafted two lesser known prospects from Temple and William & Mary but both have potential. The team’s other main need was at receiver. Instead of reaching early, they took intriguing players late that could still develop. Mike Thomas from Arizona is the best slot receiver propect in the draft in some people’s eyes. Though he is small, he is very fluid and could step up and make some catches. Jarrett Dillard is another smaller receiver at 5′10 but his college career involved tons of production and he could come in and make an impact from the get go. In the last round they took Tiquan Underwood, one of the two great receivers from Rutgers last year. I don’t know why he fell so far but he is fast and is 6′1 so he could become a solid player. The last player that I am intrigued by is running back Rashad Jennings from Liberty. He is a solid individual who transferred to the small-school for family reasons. He is a big runner who could end up complimenting Maurice Jones-Drew very nicely.

The other team I was impressed by was the San Diego Chargers. Larry English is an interesting player that can develop as an outside linebacker and add depth. Because the team is stacked at the position, he can be afforded some time to learn. He could very well be a solid pass rusher from the beginning also.

The two guards the team drafted could both be solid starters in the league. Louis Vasquez dominated the combine by showing he is extremely strong. He also displayed solid pass-blocking skills at Texas Tech. He has the potential to be better in the run game and doesn’t have to start immediately. Tyronne Green from Auburn also had a good college career. He has possibly the best initial punch of any drafted linemen. I like his overall athleticism a lot.

Vaughn Martin, the defensive nose tackle from Canada has a great story and is an interesting prospect. If he turns into a solid nose tackle after Jamal Williams stops playing, the team will look very smart.

Gartrell Johnson, the running back from Colorado State, is one of my favorite prospects this year. He is one of the most ripped college players I’ve ever seen and he pounds the ball at the line of scrimmage. He is not a burner but plays hard and can make tough yards. If the team is content to let LaDainian Tomlinson leave, Johnson can step in. The team apparently wants to keep Darren Sproles, the little speedster, so perhaps Johnson can compliment him nicely in the future.

FINAL MOCK DRAFT! (4/24/09)

April 24, 2009

1. DET- Matthew Stafford, QB Georgia- At some point a team has to measure whether the anticipation factor of bringing in a top notch big name QB is more important than drafting a player that can play immediately. The negotiations going on between these two parties seem to indicate that a young QB is important to the franchise.

2. STL- Jason Smith, OT Baylor- By selecting Smith, they improve on the o-line instantly. This guy offers more athleticism than the other OT prospects as he is a former tight end. Props to the underdog Big XII school Baylor for producing such a talented player.

3. KC- Aaron Curry, LB Wake Forest- I realize the team has other needs and could trade out but finding a partner will be tough because so much money is involved in the pick. Curry has only one perceived weakness- pass rushing skills. I say draft a sound tackler and let him be mentored. Also Curry is a great character guy which I always love.

4. SEA- Mark Sanchez, QB USC- It will either be Sanchez or Eugene Monroe here. They could be throwing out a smoke-screen to enhance trade possibilities by saying they want Sanchez. By drafting him though, the new coaching staff buys some extra time for developing the team into a solid contender.

5. CLE- B.J. Raji, DT Boston College- This guy is pretty quick for a nose tackle, so much that new coach Eric Mangini could put him at d-end in the 3-4 scheme while Shaun Rogers is still on the roster. Rogers though has complained several times and could possibly be on his way out sooner or later.

6. CIN- Eugene Monroe, T Virginia- The team needs o-line help drastically. Having Monroe fall to them would be great because the next best OT- Andre Smith comes with baggage whereas Monroe doesn’t. He will be able to come in and start as a rookie.

7. OAK- Michael Crabtree, WR Texas Tech- Everyone says that Al Davis is obsessed with speed and thus Jeremy Maclin fits this pick. I think Davis also loves play-makers and big name guys.  Crabtree simply is great with the ball in his hands and would be another nice young addition to the team’s offense.

8. JAC- Jeremy Maclin, WR Missouri- The team needs wide receiver help very badly and Maclin provides an instant home-run threat. Can Maclin instantly start? It might be a stretch but hopefully he can at least be the slot guy for the time being while dominating on special teams as a return guy.

9. GB- Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB  Texas- The team is switching to the 3-4 and needs edge rushers. Orakpo appears to have the ability to lineup as an outside linebacker in the new defense and get to the quarterback from early on in his career. Orakpo is rated as the best pass rusher on the board and Green Bay would be delighted if he falls this far.

10. SF- Everette Brown, DE/OLB Florida State- This guy has a tremendous blend of size and speed and should help the 49er 3-4 allignment at least as a rusher from day 1. Having a solid defense would go a long way toward getting the team back toward playoff contention and Brown immediately adds some athleticism.

11. BUF- Tyson Jackson, DE LSU- The team needs pass-rushing help and offensive line help. This pick will either be a offensive tackle or a pass rusher. Jackson fits in a 3-4 scheme a little better in my opinion but he can still flat out get to the quarterback. He is one of those guys that might be better in the NFL than in college.

12. DEN- Aaron Maybin, DE/OLB Penn State- Maybin eases the transition to the 3-4 defense because he can also get to the passer. The Broncos could go several directions with this pick but Maybin is highly ranked on many boards and looks like a good pick here.

13. WAS- Andre Smith, T Alabama- Smith is a super talent with question marks about his character. Washington could trade up for Sanchez but could upgrade their o-line here if they stay put.

14. NO- Malcolm Jenkins, DB Ohio State- Jenkins has great ball skills which the Saints secondary lacks to a large degree. Jenkins will probably play safety but is talented and versatile. This pick makes a lot of sense though the Saints might pick up a running back here.

15. HOU- Brian Cushing, LB USC- The team’s defense seems just a couple upgrades away from being dominant to a large degree. The secondary needs upgrades but Cushing is a solid pickup that helps the team’s tackling ability.

16. SD- Rey Maualuga, LB USC- The team could go a lot of ways here but adding this solid player to the current linebacker core is scary to think about. Shawne Merriman could tutor Maualuga while he learns the game at a higher level.

17. NYJ- Josh Freeman, QB Kansas State- This team could very well trade up for Sanchez as well but if they stay put Freeman is definitely on their radar. They can afford to let him develop while Kellen Clemons plays for a short time. Drafting a quarterback would make sense for the new coaching staff to develop.

18. DEN- Clay Matthews, LB USC- The Broncos could go a lot of ways with this pick including trading up for Sanchez because reports are the team really wants him. If they don’t move they could continue to make the transition to the 3-4 that Mike Nolan, the d-coordinator runs.

19. TB- Peria Jerry, DT Ole Miss- The team needs just an upgrade or two on the d-line to make the unit dominant and take pressure off Gaines Adams. Jerry fits the 4-3 scheme they run very well because of his combination of strength and quickness.

20. DET- Michael Oher, T Ole Miss- Oher could very well be gone by this spot but the team needs to upgrade the trenches and Oher is highly rated. They could just as easily draft a different O-tackle if Oher is gone. Defensive line is also a possibility here.

21. PHI- Beanie Wells, RB Ohio State-  The team needs to take some pressure off Brian Westbrook and Wells can take handoffs from day 1. Wells has the strength to run inside well and this makes a lot of sense.  This pick could really upgrade the Philly offense to an elite status.

22. MIN- Eben Britton, T Arizona- The Vikings could take a receiver here but Britton seems like a good fit especially when Bryant McKinnie could be getting on their last nerve. Why not continue to upgrade the o-line so Adrian Peterson can continue to dominate?

23. NE- James Laurinaitis, LB Ohio State- The team could very well trade up because they own so many picks. This guy could upgrade the linebacking core and provide some youth that is needed. He is a great tackler who can help the special teams as well.

24. ATL- Ziggy Hood, DT Missouri- This guy is rising on draft boards and can immediately help the defense get better. They are putting together a solid young core of players and Hood adds to this strategy.

25. MIA- Hakeem Nicks, WR NC- On film this guy looks unstoppable with great hands, possibly the best in the draft. His overall speed is the only concern but Nicks can come in and get first downs for the Dolphins right away. The team needs a possession receiver to compliment Tedd Ginn Jr. and Nicks could be that guy.

26. BAL- Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR Maryland- He has elite speed and solid size to go along with it. The Ravens could go a lot of ways here but why not add another receiver with Derrick Mason aging?

27. IND- William Beatty, T UConn- The O-line looked a little worse last year and protecting Peyton Manning plus upgrading the run game should be a priority. Beatty has some athleticism and can play right away. The team simply needs a better run game and adding a running back could also be done here. The team also needs d-line help but no one fits the spot value-wise here.

28. BUF- Darius Butler, DB UConn- The team could do a lot of things with this pick including o-line help but Butler adds some solid athleticism to the secondary that got hurt by free-agency. Butler could combine with Leodis McKelvin to make a solid young secondary.

29. NYG- Kenny Britt, WR Rutgers- The team needs a wide receiver more than anything by far. They could very well trade for a veteran but Britt makes sense here if they don’t move. Britt is a solid receiver that simply makes first downs and fights for the ball in the air.

30. TEN- Robert Ayers, DE Tennessee- Although the team needs help on the interior d-line more, Ayers immediately adds to a solid amount of pass rushing skills to the team with an already nice d-line. Ayers can play freely on third downs as a rusher without huge amounts of pressure on him which is ideal.

31. ARI- Knowshon Moreno, RB Georgia- While it doesn’t seem possible that he can fall this far, running backs are a plenty in this draft and many teams are already set. Moreno can create a nice one-two combo with Tim Hightower next year because Edgerrin James could very well not be around.

32. PIT- Alphonso Smith, DB Wake Forest- The team doesn’t have amazing corners and could use an upgrade. Many players could go here including an o-lineman but Smith is a solid player that can play as the nickel back right away.

NEW MOCK DRAFT (4/14)

April 14, 2009

1. DET- Matthew Stafford, QB Georgia- I still say the team should build in the trenches but it seems a quarterback will be the choice. Here’s hoping they are able to groom him initially at least so his chances of succeeding are raised.

2. STL- Jason Smith, T Baylor- The team will take a tackle most likely and it comes down to Monroe or Smith. Monroe is bigger but Smith is more athletic.

3. KC- Aaron Curry, LB Wake Forest- The team could very well trade down to obtain another pick. They are without a second round pick because of the Matt Cassell & Mike Vrabel trade. New GM Scott Pioli will probably tend to accumulate draft picks like in New England and getting more picks will mean adding more overall talent to the squad. Curry though is an outstanding talent with great discipline and a will to succeed. New Chief linebackers Vrabel and Zach Thomas would be great mentors.

4. SEA- Eugene Monroe, T Virginia- The team has several needs upfront on defense but Monroe is a top talent and the offensive line in Seattle is not outstanding besides Walter Jones, who is getting older.

5. CLE- Brian Orakpo, DE/OLB Texas- The Browns are hoping this hybrid player will fall to them because Orakpo has the athleticism to be a great pass rusher in the 3-4 scheme the team is running. A lack of pass rush was a main weakness of the team a year ago.

6. CIN- Andre Smith, T Alabama- With many question marks on the o-line the team is forced to gamble on the top-talent in Smith who has definite upside but many question marks concerning his drive and mental makeup.

7. OAK- Michael Crabtree, WR Texas Tech- This guy can flat out play though the Raiders might opt for more speed in the receiving core and go with Jeremy Maclin. Crabtree though, can make a difference and can make tougher catches by using his height and jumping skills.  Crabtree would make the young WR core in Oakland become a nice group.

8. JAC- B.J. Raji, DT Boston College- There have been rumors about Raji testing positive for marijuana during the combine. The Jaguars need defensive line help but Raji must prove he is mature enough to play at the next level. The Jags will not take more risks on players with discipline problems because of the recent instances the team has had.

9. GB- Everette Brown, OLB/DE Florida State- Why not add a great pass rusher to the mix? The team is switching to the 3-4 defense and Brown will ease the transition by providing great speed on the outside.

10. SF- Mark Sanchez, QB USC- The team might opt to upgrade the defense but Sanchez has great value here and the quarterbacking ranks in San Fran could possibly use an upgrade.

11. BUF- Aaron Maybin, LB/DE- Penn State- This guy is a supreme athlete who can upgrade any pass rush. This team definitely needs to get more pressure on the quarterback and Maybin fits the bill. He is moving up boards right now though so hopefully he will still be around.

12. DEN- Tyson Jackson, DE LSU- The team is also switching to the 3-4 and Jackson would be an upgrade. The team is moving its current defensive ends to outside linebacker because of size issues. Jackson has the size to succeed upfront in the new scheme.

13. WAS- Michael Oher, T Ole Miss- The team needs offensive line help so Jason Campbell has more time to operate and Clinton Portis has more lanes to run through. Oher has a few questions concerning his dedication to the game also but he has supreme potential at the left tackle spot.

14. NO- Malcolm Jenkins, DB Ohio State- This team needs upgrades in the secondary and Jenkins is the best available. He might switch to safety but has the  athleticism and more importantly the ball skills to constantly be making plays.

15. HOU- Brian Cushing, LB USC- This pick might be a bit of a reach but they need just a few more defensive players to be successful. They might take a chance on Vontae Davis but Cushing makes the defensive front seven even more solid.

16. SD- Rey Maualuga, LB USC- Adding another solid linebacker to this defense makes the team scary. Maualuga might not be a supreme athlete but he has great instincts and is understands what it takes to be a great tackler.

17. NYJ- Josh Freeman, QB Kansas State- This guy is flying up draft boards because he  looks the part of an NFL quarterback and has a strong arm.  The Jets though could feel they need an upgrade at the QB position.

18. DEN- Peria Jerry, DT Ole Miss-  Once again the team needs players that fit into the 3-4 scheme and Jerry can be dominant upfront. He has both strength and explosiveness and will be fun to watch.

19. TB- Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee- He is flying up boards because of his pass-rushing skills. The Bucs need just a little upgrade in the pass rushing department and Ayers can straight up get to the quarterback.

20. DET- Eben Britton, T Arizona- The new team philosophy involves dominating the line of scrimmage and Britton will help the offensive line. Getting some offensive linemen to open holes for Kevin Smith is essential.

21. PHI- Chris Wells, RB Ohio State- Brian Westbrook cannot get worn down if the team wants to make a run to the Super Bowl this year. Wells will compliment Westbrook by pounding the football upfront between the tackles. He will get a chance to play early and often.

22. MIN-Jeremy Maclin, WR Missouri- It’s very possible that Maclin will be gone by then. Minnesota might feel it needs to upgrade the receiving core once again. Maclin provides instant play-making ability because of his insane speed. I think if Sidney Rice develops in year three that him and Berian will provide a solid one-two punch. Maybe Maclin could play a lot in the slot.

23. NE- Clay Matthews, LB USC- The team obviously has an aging linebacker core to a degree and Matthews would combine with Jerod Mayo to start another great group in the middle of the defense.

24. ATL- Vontae Davis, DB Illinois- Davis is a supreme talent that just needs to be coached. He has tons of athleticism but has some technique issues.

25. MIA- Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR Maryland- The team needs some solid receivers that can catch balls in traffic and get first downs. This guy adds another degree of speed as well which is a plus.

26. BAL- Percy Harvin, WR Florida- The receiving core is lacking to a degree and Harvin adds a lot of play-making skills to the mix. Harvin can instantly aid the special teams as well.

27. IND- Evander Hood, DT Missouri- This guy perfectly fits the Colts scheme involving speedy guys getting across the line of scrimmage. Hood is also not overly undersized like some Colts defenders.

28. PHI- William Beatty, T UConn- The team has definite offensive line needs and Beatty is the best tackle available. If they love one of the top tackles in the draft they could trade up.

29. NYG- Hakeem Nicks, WR NC- Obviously with Amani Toomer aging and Plaxico Burress being released the team has a need. If Mario Manningham or Steve Smith step up and Nicks produces, this could be an intriguing group of pass-catchers.

30. TEN- Kenny Britt, WR Rutgers- Britt is a little bit of a reach here but the team has an obvious need. Only Justin Gage is a solid receiver in Tennessee and he gets injured somewhat often. Britt can be a solid possession receiver with an upside.

31. ARI- Knowshon Moreno, RB Georgia- If Moreno falls to this point, the Cardinals will pick him up so Tim Hightower and him can become a great two player running back tandem. Edgerrin James is most-likely out of the picture.

32. PIT- Max Unger, OL Oregon- The team will have a chance to take a solid offensive-line prospect here and Unger can play multiple positions.

Kansas City Strips

March 17, 2009

In an attempt to localize my blogging coverage, I am going to start discussing the Chiefs and Royals to a larger extent.

First off: The Kansas City Royals

They will simply be better this year. It’s hard to have people believe me because I am so optimistic every year but something is different this year in spring training. The key is that more competition is occurring.  Guys like Brian Bannister who was the number three guy in the rotation last year might not even make the team this year. I love the guy but he simply is not pitching well in spring training and didn’t pitch overly well last year.

Everyone has stated that although the team is stressing the on-base percentage statistic as important in their team strategy, the roster is not full of players that usually have a large on-base percentage. While I cannot despute that, I still think this team will flat out rock in the home run category. I guess whether or not runners will be on base at all during the home runs will be a different story.

I mean with Guillen, Jacobs, Butler and Gordon all capable of 2o+ home runs, that is a solid core. Add in Olivo with at least 15 and maybe 15 from Teahen if he plays enough,(he is tearing up spring training but who knows), and John Buck who appears to be swinging better, then there is a solid core of home run hitters on the team.

The key will be for Aviles, DeJesus and Crisp to get on base. Props to new hitting coach Kevin Seitzer. I know all the press always has a positive spin on the impact of new coaching but he appears to be a hard worker who has already done some good things when it comes to aiding hitters. His work seems to definitely be focused on Gordon and Buck right now as both appear to have made strides.

I predicted that Kyle Davies would be a 15 game winner before spring training started and he has done nothing to make me think differently. He will probably be the number 3 guy this year and I am excited. He was a pretty high prospect that never seemed to get it together in Atlanta. He still is young though and I am stoked to see him be a consistent pitcher this year.

Now onto football and the Kansas City Chiefs.

All the talk right now in KC sports land revolves around the Chiefs running a 3-4 defense next season. I can promise you they will not specialize in it to a large extent though. Why you ask? Because Glenn Dorsey is still on the team plus they don’t have a solid 3-4 defensive front personnel-wise yet.

Dorsey’s career will be really interesting to watch now. He simply doesn’t fit a 3-4 allignment in my book. He doesn’t have large arms to take on multiple blockers and simply doesn’t seem to be a nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme. Thus four man fronts will be required for him to be in the game. The team has invested way too much in him for his bench-warming skills to be illustrated.  To be honest, a lot of people were down on him last year. He did finish rather strong and it seemed he played way too often and didn’t receive nearly enough plays off. Defensive linemen arguably should receive the most subbing because they are big men and high intensity  is required on every play.  He could possibly switch to defensive end in the 3-4 scheme but again he is not tall or lanky so it will be hard for him to battle against taller, more athletic tackles.

The Chiefs linebacking core still needs some upgrading. I felt new linebacker Demorrio Williams was not utilized last season but it is hard to see him fitting in a 3-4 scheme because he is underweight and not overly tall either. Bringing in Mike Vrabel to teach the scheme while playing was smart but he can only do so much because he is aging.

Props to new coach Todd Haley for calling quarterback Tyler Thigpen and telling him to show up and compete because newly acquired QB Matt Cassell will not be handed the starting job. This is smart and once again competition breeds success. I am worried about Cassell operating in the same style of offense as he did in New England because the Chiefs don’t yet have a strong offensive line for it. Hopefully some good personnel moves and coaching will make the transition easier.

Thanks for reading.

Mock Draft One

March 10, 2009

1. DET- Aaron Curry, LB  WAKE FOREST- With a new coach that comes from Tennessee where linebackers play a huge role, the Lions can’t pass on the best player available in the draft.

2. STL- Eugene Monroe, T VIRGINIA- The team appears to be upset with Alex Barron and he might be replaced. Also Orlando Pace, the future Hall of Famer, is getting older and has problems staying healthy.

3. KC- B.J. Raji, DT BOSTON COLLEGE-  The team must acquire good players and Raji is the best player available. The team must make the transition to the 3-4 and they don’t currently have a definite nose tackle on the roster.

4. SEA- Everette Brown, LB FLORIDA STATE- Linebacker Leroy Hill has had problems with the law and could be replaced. The team really needs defensive line help here but Brown will make a solid core of linebackers with Julian Peterson and Lofa Tatupu.

5. CLE- Jason Smith, T BAYLOR- Joe Thomas is a beast at one tackle position but the other side is not so solid. Smith can come in and provide immediate support.

6. CIN- Brian Orakpo, DE TEXAS- The team needs a lot of pass rushing help so the top picks in the secondary can perform at a higher level. Orakpo has elite athleticism and can get to the quarterback.

7. OAK- Michael Crabtree, WR TEXAS TECH- Crabtree is a legit prospect and simply put the film doesn’t lie. Getting Russell some talent at receiver will help out the offense and the team will really have a solid group of young players.

8. JAC- Matthew Stafford, QB GEORGIA- I really like David Garrard but the team feels obligated to upgrade the passing game. The offensive line was aided with the signing of Tra Thomas.

9. GB- Aaron Maybin, LB PENN STATE- The team could go with Malcolm Jenkins to bolster the secondary but the transition to the 3-4 allignment requires more linebackers and Maybin fits the bill.

10. SF- Malcolm Jenkins, DB OHIO STATE- The 49ers could use a little help at several positions but Jenkins ranks the highest here and could play safety or corner in San Fran.

11. BUF- Michael Oher, T OLE MISS- Jason Peters is angry over contract negotiations and could be traded. Langston Walker is nothing  more than solid on the other side. Oher has problems with a lack of intensity so teams might shy away some.

12. DEN- Rey Maualuga, LB USC- He is a safe pick despite looking slow and getting hurt at the combine. The film shows a solid linebacker who simply is a solid tackler. With the 3-4 being implemented, he will start right away.

13. WAS- Andre Smith, T ALABAMA- The Redskins still need o-line help and Smith is crazy talented despite possibly being a head-case. If he can get his mind in the right place, he will excel.

14 NO- Chris Wells, RB OHIO STATE- The Saints need some help in the secondary but have already invested in several young players including Tracy Porter and Usama Young who could contribute. Reggie Bush cannot pound the ball up the middle and Deuce McAllister is off the roster. Wells can fill in and still gain some occasional outside yards because of his athleticism.

15. HOU- Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR MARYLAND- Andre Johnson can get double-teamed and needs a compliment. This guy tore up the combine and can stretch the field.

16. SD- Peria Jerry, DT MISSISSIPPI- This guy has really rose up the charts recently and can eventually replace Jamal Williams in the middle of the 3-4.

17. NYJ- Mark Sanchez, QB USC- The Jets are praying for one of the QBs to fall to them and could possibly trade up. Kellen Clemons might be the answer but he might not be. At least he is a veteran.

18. CHI- Eben Britton, T ARIZONA- The Bears are in desperate need of tackles. First round pick Chris Williams  from a year ago is essentially a rookie because of an injury and Britton would make a good tandem with him.

19. TB- Jeremy Maclin, WR MISSOURI- The team is in real need of some speed with the departure of Joey Galloway. Maclin is real explosive and can contribute with his speed.

20. DET- William Beatty- T CONNECTICUT- The team needs some offensive line upgrades because they want to dominate upfront. Beatty will provide great blocks for emerging running back Kevin Smith.

21. PHI- Sean Smith, DB UTAH- Replacing Brian Dawkins is a tough task but Smith is athletic enough to make plays. He could also contribute as the nickel back if need be.

22. MIN- Percy Harvin, WR FLORIDA- The team was interested in adding free agent receivers despite already having Bernard Berrian, Sidney Rice and the likes. They were unable to sign anyone so Harvin might be there guy.

23. NE- Clay Matthews, LB USC- This guy blew up at the combine by showing off his athleticism. The 3-4 defense needs athletes, especially in New England where Mike Vrabel is gone and Teddy Bruschi is aging.

24. ATL- Brian Cushing, LB USC- The team has emerging linebacker Curtis Lofton and just signed Mike Peterson. Adding Cushing makes this a dominant core. The secondary might also get upgraded with this pick.

25. MIA- James Laurinitis, LB OHIO STATE- The team is also running a 3-4 and needs linebackers to make plays. This guy is just a solid player that really understands the game.

26. BAL- Alphonso Smith, DB WAKE FOREST- A lack of healthy defensive backs cost the team a Super Bowl trip last season. The team will have Fabian Washington and Dominique Foxworth as starters and Smith can develop as the nickel.

27. IND- KNOWSHON MORENO, RB GEORGIA- This might be a surprise pick but Joseph Addai can’t stay healthy and two back systems are in right now. Moreno can uses his talents to keep the Indy offense at an elite level.

28. PHI- Brandon Pettigrew, TE OKLAHOMA STATE- The team needs a talented tight end to help out as L.J. Smith might not be back. This guy can’t run overly fast but he has good hands and is a talented blocker.

29. NYG- D.J. Moore, DB VANDERBILT- The team needs to continue to add some youth in the secondary and Moore has the talent to play zone or man.

30. TEN- Ron Brace, DT BOSTON COLLEGE- Losing Albert Haynesworth was bad and getting a replacement is important to the keep the defense playing at a high level.

31. ARI- Robert Ayers, DE TENNESSEE- They lost Antonio Smith in free agency and need to add some youth upfront. Ayers has risen considerably with a strong senior year.

32. PIT- Hakeem Nicks, WR NORTH CAROLINA- Hines Ward looked slow in the playoffs and is getting older. Nicks runs solid routes and can make a big impact early on.

Combine Defense Winners and Losers

February 28, 2009

1. AARON CURRY, LB, WAKE FOREST- He looked like a beast! Some players just want to keep their stock when already rated pretty high. This guy is motivated to be the first pick of the draft! Great to see, whoever gets him is a lucky team.

2. LAWRENCE SIDBURY, DE, RICHMOND- I noticed his elite athleticism during Senior Bowl drills. He ran the fastest of any d-lineman at the combine. Maybe he could play linebacker some?

3. DONALD WASHINGTON, DB, OHIO STATE- His 45 vertical jump is insane. He didn’t look great in college sometimes but workouts at least show you are a good athlete.

4. LADARIUS WEBB, DB, NICHOLLS STATE- The defensive backs ran slow. Webb though led the group with a solid 4.46 forty time. He definitely got himself in better position draft-wise. Gotta love the small school guys.

5. JASPER BRINKLEY, LB, SOUTH CAROLINA- This is a guy who is a freakish athlete and a solid linebacker. He was injured during his last season and speed has always been an issue. He then ran well and put himself into the middle rounds at least. Nice job.

6. EVERETTE BROWN, DE, FLORIDA STATE- Ran decently and kept himself in first round consideration. Will be a solid 4-3 d end at the next level.

7. CONNOR BARWIN, DE, CINCINNATI- Ran well and even played tight end in college. What a great athlete. Helped his value as a d-lineman with a 4.66 time.

7. BRIAN CUSHING, LB, USC- Simply looked smooth in drills and will definitely be a first round pick at linebacker.

8. CLAY MATTHEWS, LB, USC- Went from walk-on to possible first round pick? What a great story. It helps that he has three relatives that played in the league including his father.

9. CHRIS CLEMONS, S, CLEMSON- Ran a 4.41 forty. Not bad for a guy trying to get out of the shadow of the other Clemson safety named Michael Hamlin.

10. STANLEY ARNOUX, LB, WAKE FOREST- Overshadowed by Mr. Aaron Curry, Stanley ran the second fastest forty besides Curry and obviously helped himself. Those Demon Decons apparently make ‘em fast.

11. GERALD MCGRATH, LB, SOUTHERN MISS- Ran well also. Has decent size at 6′2, 231. Man this team is putting out players as well.

12. C.J. SPILLMAN, S, MARSHALL- Ran a solid 4.50 forty. Also has good size at 6′0, 197. Tall safeties are a plus and he put himself in good position for draft day.

13. DAVID BRUTON, S, NOTRE DAME- This guy is huge at 6′2, 219. He shows up at the combine and runs a solid 4.46. That is impressive. If this guy can play at the next level, he will be fun to watch.

Losers on Defense

1. REY MAUALUGA, LB, USC- He ran really slow in the forty and pulled up injured. He will have to really look good at USC’s pro day to gain back some ground. Other USC linebackers are moving past him on draft boards actually.

2. BRIAN ORAKPO, DE, TEXAS- Scouts wanted to see an athletic guy who could play outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He also got injured and will have to workout well at his pro day to gain back some ground.

3. MALCOLM JENKINS, DB, OHIO STATE- Was generally regarded as the top corner before the combine. He ran much slower than expected and really hurt his stock. Now there is even talk that he will have to move to safety. Not a good chain of events.

4. VONTAE DAVIS, CB, ILLINOIS- He has always been an exceptional athlete. Once again, this time during the combine, he showed off his athleticism while at the same time looking terrible technique-wise. A good secondary coach could get him squared away though. Would have been considered the top corner if he would have performed better since Jenkins ran slow. Doesn’t help that his bother Vernon hasn’t done much after being a top pick for the 49ers.

Combine Offense Winners and Losers

February 28, 2009

First the Offense

1. LOUIS VASQUEZ, OL, TEXAS TECH- The guy dominated the weight lifting portion of workouts. He played too much in college to be considered a workout warrior so his work on the bench press won’t go unnoticed.

2. JOHNNY KNOX, WR, ABILENE-CHRISTIAN- Any time a receiver runs a forty yard dash in the 4.4 range or faster, they are going to get some hype. Congrats to this small school guy for getting himself on the minds of scouts.

3. CEDRIC PEERMAN, RB, VIRGINIA- The running backs group was obviously slower forty yard dash-wise than people hoped for.  He ran the fastest of any back their and that will easily improve his stock at least to a degree.

4. LYDON MURTHA, OL, NEBRASKA- This guy got a late invite to the combine and really showed off his athleticism. He is near the top of most of the top performer lists for the drills he participated in at Indy.  Now he might switch to tight end I’ve heard. At any rate he definitely put himself into position to be drafted which wasn’t the case previously.

5.  JARED COOK, TE, SOUTH CAROLINA- He led the tight ends in forty yard dash times with a real solid 4.5. This time moves him up a lot. He will probably get drafted on the first day for sure.

6. SHAWN NELSON, TE, SOUTHERN MISS- He had a great Senior Bowl and was able to keep the momentum going with a strong combine. He was second in the forty times and also moved himself into the first day of picks.

7. DARRIUS HEYWARD-BEY, WR, MARYLAND- Ran a rediculous 4.3 in the forty. With Crabtree getting hurt, Darrius is hoping to vault himself up draft boards. He will definitely not go past the second round at this point.

8. PAT WHITE, QB, WEST VIRGINIA- Some on-lookers said he was the most impressive QB at the combine. I won’t go that far but running a 4.5 forty and not looking out of place during the passing drills is a definite plus. He plans to workout at his pro-day both as a WR and a QB. Good thinking champ. This kid is going to find a way to make an impact for a team at the next level.

9.  STEPHEN MCGEE, QB, TEXAS A&M- He ran a 4.7 and looked decent throwing.  He fits a play-action rollout system really nicely in my eyes. Despite getting hurt during the year, he has done enough to get some looks once more.

10. MARK SANCHEZ, QB, USC- Though his passing performances during the drills weren’t jaw-dropping, it was his interviews with teams that really set him up nicely for draft day. There were possible questions regarding his character and leadership but it seems they were likely answered for several teams.

11. PATRICK TURNER, WR, USC- He did not run the forty but looked really smooth in receiving drills. He demonstrated good hands and as good of footwork as many of the smaller receivers who will likely be slot guys. Turner has the height as everyone knows, but with a good pro day 40 time, he will really improve his value even more.

12. JASON SMITH, T, BAYLOR- Everyone knows he is athletic because he is a former tight end. He needed to demonstrate the strength of an NFL offensive lineman. He did that by tying for fourth overall in the bench press category for o-linemen at the combine. He’s set himself up to be a top ten choice at this point.

13. AARON KELLY, WR, CLEMSON- He might have shed the possession receiver label a little by running a decent forty. He is stuck in a good group of receivers though and probably will get picked up in the third or fourth round.

LOSERS ON OFFENSE

1. JAISON WILLIAMS, WR, OREGON- Really fought the ball instead of smoothly making catches. Has good size and might have to switch to tight end. Will probably get picked up late now.

2. DERRICK WILLIAMS, WR, PENN STATE- Was expected to look really fast. I mean he was Mr. do everything in college including returning kicks and punts. Instead ran rather slow in the 4.6s and hurt his stock some.

3. MOHAMED MASSAQUOI, WR, GEORGIA- So much for me giving him props for looking smooth in Senior Bowl workouts before getting hurt and helping his stock. He ran in the 4.6 range and definitely dropped his stock now.

4. NATE SWIFT, WR, NEBRASKA- I loved this guy on film and hoped he could put in an ok forty to get himself drafted late. Instead he ran in the 4.6 range and did not distinguish himself. I thought he looked ok in receiving drills but he did not do enough to definitely get drafted.

5. ANDRE SMITH, T, ALABAMA- As everyone knows, he left the combine and the Indy officials were going crazy. This is because the officials were responsible for him, and he was eventually found at the airport in Georgia. Wow this guy is really hurting his draft stock. He went from definite top five to way later in the first round. Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe both have moved ahead of him position-wise.

6. BRANDON PETTIGREW, TE, OKLAHOMA STATE- Ran a forty in the 4.8 range. This shows he will not be able to run  a successful seam route at the next level which is not a good thing. He was ranked as the best tight end by far. Now Cook and Nelson among others are starting to gain ground. Basically Pettigrew can catch and block but not run well while others can catch and run but not block as well.

7. CHRIS WELLS, RB, OHIO STATE- Ran a 4.59 forty, which is not great. Could have made himself the top running back prospect with a nice workout. Now the running back ratings are cloudy.

8. NATE DAVIS, QB, BALL STATE- Maybe I am crazy but he looked a lot faster while playing.  He ran a 4.9 forty which might hurt his stock because he doesn’t have great size.

9. RASHAD JENNINGS, RB, LIBERTY- I was excited to see the small school prospect perform. He first ran a solid forty in the 4.4 range I believe. Then his next run was in the 4.7 range. Scouts asked him to run again because of the huge difference in times. His third run was again in the 4.7 range so that hurts him some.

Day Four-Final Report

February 23, 2009
Today was as off the hook as it gets. I saw a ton of people including NFL personnel and prospects. I came to the conclusion that just traveling back and forth from our homes to our destinations might be the best bet for anyone trying to get into any field because of the number of people you encounter along the way during traveling.
Myself and Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter at the airport.

Myself and Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter at the airport.

I hope I was able to plant a few seeds as they say as far as getting my name out there. It was an amazing experience and I will never forget all the people I met during the duration of the trip.

I was able to see and hear many things regarding the combine workouts that I would like to share with you.
Nebraska offensive tackle Lydon Murtha took advantage of the late combine invite he received and led or was near the top of many workouts result lists. I am not sure where he will end round-wise in the draft but he definitely opened up some eyes with his performances.

Wide receiver Johnny Knox from Abilene Christian ran a nice 4.34 40 yd dash which will probably get him drafted. Darrius Heyward-Bey really stepped up with a 4.30 forty.  Aaron Kelly also ran well and might have enhanced his worth because he was considered just a possession receiver but apparently has some speed to boot. Several guys ran not so well including Derrick Williams of Penn State who ended up with a time of around like 4.7. Not very good.

The running backs did not run well in the forty yard dash. Virginia’s Cedric Peerman led the way with a 4.45 time. One guy, Gartrell Johnson from Colorado State, looks like a man-beast. He will definitely get picked up and if he becomes a fullback, if I were a linebacker, I’d get the heck out of the way when he was coming through holes.

The quarterbacks are also very interesting. One guy, Stephen McGee of Texas A&M, seems to have some potential. He ran in the 4.7 range in the 40 and fits in a play-action rollout scheme very well. Ball State’s Nate Davis dissappointed me with a 40 in the 4.9 range.

I saw tons of players including Oklahoma safety/linebacker Nic Harris, Alabama quarterback John Parker Wilson and USC receiver Patrick Turner just walking around during the day. Turner looked really smooth for a receiver who is 6′5 and weighs over 220. He definitely helped his stock.
I am signing off from the combine as I must get back to school on Monday. If I hear of any more reports from the combine, I will be sure to post. The defensive players still are in Indy with some work to do. Thank you so much for reading.
Peace

Indy Day 3, Entry 2

February 22, 2009

I have some info to pass on to fatty mogivens. I haven’t heard a lot about former Huskers but one guy who has raised an eyebrow is tackle Lydon Murtha. He currently is listed as the fastest guy 40 yard dash wise at the combine for an offensive  lineman. He ran a 4.89 which isn’t bad for a guy who is 6′7 and over 300 pounds.

Oklahoma State tight end Brandon Pettigrew, who is listed number one at his position kind of looked slow with a 40 yard dash time in the 4.8 range. He is known as a blocker with great hands and might not be downgraded overly but he could have really enhanced his grade with a better time. South Carolina tight end Jared Cook ran a straight up 4.50 40 which is really impressive. Southern Miss tight end Shawn Nelson continues to make good impressions, running a 4.56 40 after a good Senior Bowl week. Louis Vasquez, the guard from Texas Tech, really impressed with his 39 reps at the bench press as well.

I will report back later with more info.

Peace
